NASA unveiled the first full colored image from the James Webb telescope. It shows the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 (SMACS J0723.3-7327) which acts as a gravitational lens and magnifies light coming from behind.
Thanks to a gravitational lens created by a massive cluster of galaxies astronomers were able to identify the most distant single star ever seen. The star nicknamed Earendel has between 50 and 500 solar masses and lies 28 billion light years away. According to a new study published in Nature magazine, the light detected by Hubble left the star when the universe was less than a billion years old (out of today's 13,8 billion years).
Astronomers led by Byeong-Cheol Lee have made a groundbreaking discovery, detecting a brown dwarf orbiting the red giant HD 18438. With a radius of 89 times that of the Sun, HD 18438 is now the largest known star to be orbited by an exoplanet or brown dwarf.
